More often than not, freelance web designers become home-based workers simply because they enjoy the freedom it entails, and because they find that it is so much more flexible than working at an average 9-to-5 job. But how do you manage your business so that you would not be buried under increasing workload?
My first advice would be to wisely separate your working space and your personal space. Your working space should contain the necessary peripherals but try not to stack too many equipment that you do not need. Besides being an eyesore, the extra bulk might hinder productivity. You should also organize your paperwork and invest in good storage spaces. Label crucial documents such as client invoices so that you know where they are in a jiffy.
You should also set your own schedule and stick to it. While it might seem difficult for the first few weeks and even months to adjust working from home as opposed to a Web site design company, you’ll eventually get the hang of it if you stick to an agenda. Procrastination is your worst enemy so try to get things done ASAP. To “reward” yourself for a job well done, you can either take some time off by relaxing in your personal space or just get some ice cream from the convenience shop. Lastly, remember that when your workload gets too much for you to bear, do get a helper to help out with the housework so that clutter won’t get in your way.
